How to Write a Thank-You Note

"Thank you so much" is what you write when you weren't paying attention. A kept thank-you note has units in it: what they did, when, and what would have happened otherwise.

How to write it: three rules of restrained prose

  1. Name the act precisely — the Tuesday they stayed late, the exact favor, what it interrupted on their side.
  2. Say the counterfactual once: what you'd be doing without them. One line, no drama.
  3. Close with something small and forward: a returned container, a name you'll pass on, dinner owed.

Pick the "thank-you" mode, put "someone who did more than their part" in the first field, and let the restraint do the rest.

You stayed until two in the morning. Your train home was the 5:40.

Without you the launch dies on stage four, and I know it.

Your container is washed. There is soup in it.
