How to Write a Eulogy for a Friend

Friend eulogies fail by becoming resumes: loyal, funny, kind. Your friend was not an adjective list. Write one night — the one you both cited for years — and let the room see exactly what is gone.

How to write it: three rules of restrained prose

  1. Reconstruct one specific night: the year, the place, the wrong turn, what it cost, what you laughed at.
  2. Quote them once. Every friendship has a sentence that gets repeated at parties. Say it in their words.
  3. End with the habit that won't update: the unanswered text you still send, the extra portion you still order.

Pick the "eulogy" mode, put "the friend you'd call at any hour" in the first field, and let the restraint do the rest.
