How to Apologize to a Friend After a Fight

Friendship fights die of silence, not injury. The recap — who said what first — is a courtroom brief, and courtrooms don't have friends. Write the silence instead: how long, and what it replaced.

How to write it: three rules of restrained prose

  1. Skip the replay. One line of ownership is enough: "I said it. It was cruel. I knew it was when I said it."
  2. Count what the silence cost in shared things: the Thursday dinners, the person who'd know the answer.
  3. Offer the smallest possible repair — coffee, a returned book — with no conditions attached.

Pick the "apology" mode, put "the friend who stopped replying" in the first field, and let the restraint do the rest.

I said what I said at your kitchen table. You'd just refilled my glass.

Your ladder is still in my garage. The good one, aluminum.

Come take it. I'll be home Sunday.
